Angela is a 47-year-old single mother who lives with her 23-year-old son. Angela has severe lymphoedema and permanent nerve damage in her left arm and parts of her body. She finds it hard to manage due to loss of movement. Angela is having difficulty around the house despite being still independent. What she can do is limited due to the lymphoedema and nerve pain and becomes very easily fatigued.
Angela had a previous SASH package. But, she took a break from SASH due to Covid. Also, circumstances had changed due to health and mobility concerns. Due to Covid and health concerns, Angela felt isolated, unable to leave the house besides medical appointments.
Angela was referred to as PossABLE Advocacy to assist her in applying for NDIS access. Angela has attempted access twice before seeking advocacy.
The advocate met and guided Angela through the current process and possible outcomes. Angela did have a supportive doctor who was prepared to assist her with NDIS Access. Angela did gather some evidence before falling ill and being hospitalised for four weeks during the advocacy case.
Angela’s life expectancy had changed, and she would need palliative care services. Her doctors advised Angela that they would focus on palliative care supports rather than NDIS supports. The advocate would work with Angela in gaining some clear answers for supports during this time. The advocate obtained verbal and written confirmation that SASH packages would continue until the end of life and would no longer need NDIS access support.
